Kyle Walker’s injury on international duty has forced him to pull out of the England squad, with a game against Arsenal coming up on Sunday.
England have now confirmed that Kyle Walker has pulled out of the March international break with an injury, returning to Manchester City for further assessment.
The Telegraph report that Walker had initially tried to play on during England’s match against Brazil at the weekend, but he was forced off in the 20th minute clutching his hamstring.
Walker asked his teammates to stop play before walking off the field, walking straight down the tunnel following his substitution.
At the time, Gareth Southgate admitted they didn’t know how serious the injury is, but he suspected it was more than just tightness.
“We don’t know (the severity),” Southgate said. “He’s not had many injuries, so he himself isn’t sure whether it’s just tightness.
“I suspect if he’s feeling it, it’s a little bit more than that but we’ll know a bit more over the next 24, 36 hours.”
On Sunday morning, Walker posted on Instagram: “Hopefully it’s nothing too serious and I’m back ASAP.”
But the injury was enough to force Walker out of England’s game against Belgium on Tuesday, which could make him a doubt for Manchester City’s fixture against Arsenal on Sunday.
Walker has made 38 appearances for City this season, and it’s clear he would be one of their starters if fit.
As it stands, Walker is the only serious Manchester City injury doubt for the match, though Ederson is a lesser doubt.
Pep Guardiola told the media he’s hoping Ederson will be back for the match, and it looks like Kevin De Bruyne will also be available. Reports of an injury to Erling Haaland turned out to be incorrect.
