Chelsea have joined Arsenal in the summer race for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, according to a report.
Writing on Wednesday, Matt Law of The Telegraph brings good news and bad news for Arsenal fans with regards to a potential summer move for Nico Williams this summer.
The good news is that Williams reportedly has a release clause in his deal set at around £43m, with the clause seemingly remaining the same despite the player’s new deal in December.
The bad news is that Chelsea are interested in him, and that his wage demands would place him among the highest earners at Chelsea – let alone Arsenal.
Law adds that a Chelsea move for Williams may depend on outgoings, as the Blues also want a striker and may have to commit a lot of money to that pursuit.
Athletic Club seem to be preparing for Williams’ sale, with reports suggesting they’ve sealed a deal for Alvaro Djalo of Braga as an apparent replacement.
That deal could be worth up to €20m, with Djalo joining on a contract to 2029.
Given Djalo and Williams are similar in age and position, it does look like a strange investment if Williams remains at his current club this summer.
Williams has scored six goals and provided 11 assists in 27 appearances for Athletic Club, most recently providing a goal and an assist against Atletico Madrid to help his team into the Copa del Rey final.
John Cross of the Mirror recently reported that Arsenal scouts have been watching the winger, and he appears to be on their summer shortlist.
