The Evening Standard report that Takehiro Tomiyasu is already back in London following Japan’s elimination from the AFC Asian Cup, adding the the player should be in Arsenal’s squad against West Ham United this weekend.

With Oleksandr Zinchenko struggling with a calf injury, Tomiyasu may need to come straight back into Mikel Arteta’s side on Sunday.

In other news, Fabrizio Romano reports that Tomiyasu will officially sign his new contract at Arsenal soon, with the agreement done and “100% sealed”.

Only the formalities remain before the announcement, and Romano says Tomiyasu is ready to sign his new deal.

Romano previously claimed that Tomiyasu had attracted interest from clubs in Italy and elsewhere in recent months, but he was never likely to leave.

Arsenal always wanted him to stay, and a new deal is now incoming.

Tomiyasu hasn’t been able to play a significant role for Arsenal over the last couple of months, with his Asian Cup absence preceded by a calf injury.

The defender suffered the injury on December 2nd, missing almost a month of action before his return on December 31st. As soon as he was fit, he was off to Qatar with Japan.

One of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this season when fit, it would be great news for the team if Tomiyasu could get a run of games under his belt after signing his new deal.

Tomiyasu’s current contract lasts until 2025, having only signed a four-year deal when joining the club in 2021. You’d expect a new contract to extend that by at least a couple of years.
