Arsenal and Icelandic goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson have agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect, allowing him to leave the club on a free transfer.

This decision comes after Runarsson’s loan spell at Cardiff City was ended with just six months remaining on his Arsenal deal.

Signed for €2m in 2020, his time at the Emirates Stadium has been majorly disappointing, with only six appearances under his belt.

Although he enjoyed a brief run of five consecutive starts for Cardiff in November and December, his playing time dwindled in recent weeks following a head injury and the Bluebirds’ pursuit of other goalkeeping options, most notably Ethan Horvath from Nottingham Forest.

Faced with limited prospects at both Arsenal and Cardiff, both parties saw a mutual contract termination as the most beneficial solution.

Runarsson was earning around £780k-per-year or £15k-per-week, depending on how you like your salaries.

He is expected to sign for FC Copenhagen to be their number 2.
