Arsenal are looking for a striker ahead of the summer transfer window, but David Ornstein reports that he hasn’t heard suggestions that Ivan Toney is the top choice.
In his Q&A for The Athletic, David Ornstein gave the latest on his understanding of Arsenal’s pursuit of a striker.
Ornstein reported that Arsenal are indeed looking at the centre-forward position and will be weighing up their options, but he played down links to Ivan Toney.
The journalist doesn’t believe there are any guarantees Toney joins Arsenal in the summer, and reports that he’s “not aware of Toney being the top choice at Arsenal”.
Ornstein clarifies that Toney is likely on Arsenal’s radar, but as just one of many potential centre-forward signings, including Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Sesko, Evan Ferguson, Santiago Gimenez, Viktor Gyokeres, Joshua Zirkzee, Victor Boniface, and more.
Brentford appear to be preparing for Toney to leave, with the club agreeing a deal to bring in striker Igor Thiago in July.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank recently made some headlines when he told the media that Toney would probably be sold in the summer, due to the length of his contract.
Responding to those comments, Toney suggested it showed a lack of desire from his current club to keep him around.
“I see that as he doesn’t want me,” Toney said. “Well yeah, the manager’s said what he’s said. Listen, I can’t make clubs come and get me. I’ve just got to keep doing what I do and that’s score goals. Like I said, what will be, will be.”
Toney was suspended from football for the first half of the season due to breaching FA rules on gambling, but his form since returning will certainly make him a target for clubs in need of goals.
The striker has four goals in his first six games back with Brentford, following his 20 goals in 33 Premier League games last season.
