Arsenal have agreed a deal with Fluminense to loan Marquinhos with an option to buy ahead of rival interest from Corinthians, according to a report.
Football.London report that Arsenal have agreed a deal with Fluminense for the loan transfer of Marquinhos, with an option to buy in the deal if certain clauses are met.
Marquinhos also attracted interest from Corinthians, but the player himself reportedly chose to join Fluminense, in part to work alongside Brazil interim boss and Fluminense head coach Fernando Diniz.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Marquinhos has now signed his contract, with a medical also complete. An announcement is reportedly imminent.
The Evening Standard also previously confirmed that Arsenal had agreed a deal with Fluminense, with the player wrapping up a move after his return from the Pre-Olympic Tournament with the Brazil u23s.
Brazil’s transfer window doesn’t close until March, there was no real rush to get it done earlier.
The Pre-Olympic Tournament came to an end on Sunday, in rather unfortunate circumstances.
Brazil had made it all the way to the final qualifier with their Olympic hopes still alive, but they needed a result against Argentina in the final game. They lost 1-0 and failed to qualify.
The upside is that Marquinhos is now free to complete his loan transfer and get back into club football.
The winger had struggled to have an impact in his first loan of the campaign to FC Nantes, making just seven appearances and one start.
There’s no doubt the player’s call-up for the Pan American Games didn’t help, as he missed two months of football with Nantes as a result.
Then came the Olympic qualifiers, and the decision to cancel Marquinhos’ Nantes loan entirely.
A return to Brazil offers hope of a more consistent run of games in the second half of the season. If all goes well, Marquinhos could find himself with a permanent new home with Fluminense.
