Simon Collings reports for the Evening Standard that Arsenal’s Marquinhos has agreed to join Fluminense on loan, and he’s now in the process of wrapping up the move.

The loan move includes a fee for Arsenal, and it also reportedly contains an option for Fluminense to make the transfer permanent in the summer if certain clauses are met.

Until last weekend, Marquinhos was playing at the Pre-Olympic Tournament, so his loan move was put on hold.

With Brazil’s transfer window not closing until March, there was no real rush to get it done.

But the Pre-Olympic Tournament came to an end on Sunday, in rather unfortunate circumstances.

Brazil had made it all the way to the final qualifier with their Olympic hopes still alive, but they needed a result against Argentina in the final game. They lost 1-0 and failed to qualify.

The upside is that Marquinhos is now free to complete his loan transfer and get back into club football.

The winger had struggled to have an impact in his first loan of the campaign to FC Nantes, making just seven appearances and one start.

There’s no doubt the player’s call-up for the Pan American Games didn’t help, as he missed two months of football with Nantes as a result.

Then came the Olympic qualifiers, and the decision to cancel Marquinhos’ Nantes loan entirely.

A return to Brazil offers hope of a more consistent run of games in the second half of the season. If all goes well, Marquinhos could find himself with a permanent new home with Fluminense.
