Arsenal loanee Billy Vigar ended a run of 15 league games without a goal to give Eastbourne Borough the lead at the weekend, rewarding his manager’s faith in him.

Arsenal 20-year-old Billy Vigar joined Eastbourne Borough back in July, completing a season-long loan to the National League South club.

The Gunners youth forward then scored on his debut, grabbing the winning goal in his first senior appearance. But until last weekend, that remained his only goal for the club.

Eastbourne boss Mark Beard continued to believe in the loanee, giving him a further 15 appearances (13 starts) despite that goalless streak.

Vigar paid his manager back on Saturday, opening the scoring against Braintree with an early headed goal.

Decarrey Sheriff lifted a hopeful ball into the box, and Vigar was on hand to direct a looping effort into the far corner. The goalkeeper had no chance.

Braintree went on to draw level at 1-1 in the 20th minute, before Fletcher Holman and Leone Gravata scored for Eastbourne in the 45th and 80th minutes to secure a much-needed three points.

Saturday’s hosts remain in the bottom half of the table, but after a run of five games without a victory, they’ll just be glad to be back to winning ways.

Vigar has clearly been providing more than just goals to his team, or he wouldn’t have managed to keep his place for the last few months.

But it’s never a bad thing for an attacking player to get on the scoresheet, and the youngster will look to push on now.
