Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka sustained an ankle injury during a Champions League game against Sevilla, causing an end to his evening in the 85th minute on Wednesday.

Despite the setback, the 22-year-old managed to leave the field without assistance, acknowledging the fans’ support with applause.

The injury occurred after Saka landed after going up for a header, although Sevilla had spent the evening kicking him which couldn’t have helped. Saka fouled five times with no yellow cards given.

Post-game, Saka was seen joining his teammates to celebrate their 2-0 victory, a positive indication regarding the severity of his injury, although he did seem to be limping.

Manager Mikel Arteta, after replacing Saka, remarked, “At the end he wasn’t comfortable to carry on. Hopefully it’s not too much but I’m really pleased with his performance.”

Arteta also highlighted Saka’s resilience, “I think he’s getting used to it [being kicked]. I don’t think that’s going to change, especially with the way he plays and the way he attracts players, so he better get used to it because I don’t think it’s going to change.”

The manager further clarified the nature of the injury, “It was just a kick and I was told by the physios on the radio he wasn’t happy to continue. So, he will have some discomfort but hopefully, I am going to assume he will be OK.”

Saka, who was sidelined during the last international fixtures due to a thigh injury and missed Arsenal’s win over Manchester City, will be hoping for a swift recovery.

Speaking to the press ahead of Arsenal’s game against Burnley, Mikel Arteta said regarding Saka, who has been called up to the England squad, “We want our players to play for the club and play for the national teams and B[ukayo Saka] had to leave the pitch because he was in quite a lot of pain.

“He didn’t train yesterday and let’s see if he can make it tomorrow.”

Saka had an impressive game against Sevilla before the incident, setting up Leandro Trossard for the opening goal and scoring one himself, contributing to Arsenal’s win that leaves them just a point from the last-16.

With no English player involved in more Champions League goals this season than Saka, his presence on the pitch is pivotal for both club and country.
