Stephy Mavididi starred for Leicester City as they thrashed Southampton to go top of the Championship on Friday night.
Former Arsenal academy striker Stephy Mavididi joined Leicester City over the summer, and the 25-year-old seems to have settled in quickly with his new club.
After a goal and an assist in his first couple of appearances, the forward quickly caught the eye. But he went a few games without a goal contribution after that, dropping to the bench for Leicester’s defeat to Hull City ahead of the international break.
Coming back into the team against promotion rivals Southampton, perhaps Mavididi felt he had a point to prove, and he did so in impressive fashion.
With less than 20 seconds on the clock, Mavididi raced into the penalty area after exchanging passes with Jamie Vardy. His cutback took a deflection and fell back to Vardy, who finished for 1-0.
Leicester doubled their lead within 20 minutes, before hosts Southampton pegged one back in the 25th minute for 2-1.
Mavididi was on hand to inspire his side once again, executing a clever turn before sliding a reverse pass to set up a goal for Wilfred Ndidi.
With Southampton chasing the game in the second half, Mavididi killed the contest with a clinical breakaway goal, intercepting the ball well inside his own half before running the length of the field to score.
Mavididi ended the match with a goal and an assist, as well as playing a heavy role in Vardy’s opener, putting Leicester temporarily top of the league – albeit having played an extra game.
