Barcelona are reportedly mulling over signing Jorginho, the Arsenal midfielder, as they look to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.
Jorginho’s lack of game time under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has allegedly piqued the La Liga club’s interest, but he seems committed to the Gunners, according to his agent.
Jorginho, 31, has found his time on the pitch quite limited under Mikel Arteta, but that was to be expected.
With a mere 18 minutes spread across three Premier League games, those outside of Arsenal are claiming that the Italian midfielder is seemingly out of favour, while those inside Arsenal know that that is not the case at all.
It is claimed that the signing of English midfielder Declan Rice is a contributing factor when nobody at Arsenal ever expected Jorginho to play a starting role at the club.
But it is Rice’s performance that some in the media claim has overshadowed Jorginho, leading to speculation that Barcelona see Jorginho as a valuable, yet inexpensive acquisition.
Barcelona’s financial constraints
Given Barcelona’s existing financial difficulties, they are targeting less costly options.
It is suggested that the Catalan club views Jorginho as a reasonable alternative, especially since his contract with Arsenal expires at the end of the current season.
Jorginho’s prior transfer rumours
However, Jorginho and his agent have previously dismissed transfer rumours linking him with an exit.
“He’s happy in England and is focused on Arsenal, the Premier League, and the Champions League,” his agent Joao Santos has been quoted as saying.
He also said, “I had some calls from Saudi and also Spanish clubs like him but he’s staying at Arsenal, it’s decided.”
Potential future for Jorginho at Arsenal
Despite the limited opportunities, Jorginho’s prospects at Arsenal will certainly improve due to Thomas Partey’s injury.
With the Champions League and the League Cup approaching, Arsenal’s busy schedule will necessitate his involvement in the squad.
