Sheffield outlet The Star report that a deal for Sheffield United to sign Arsenal’s Auston Trusty has moved closer, with the defender set to join on a permanent basis for a fee of £5m.

Barring any late hiccups, Trusty is expected to be a Sheffield United player by the time their Premier League season kicks off on August 12th.

Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports reports that Sheffield United are in advanced talks with Arsenal over the move, with a fee in the region of £5m having been agreed.

Thomas claims Trusty is expected to travel for a medical in the coming days, once the deal has been finalised.

Sheffield United reporter Darren Smith initially broke the news that the club are aiming to secure the purchase of Trusty from Arsenal this summer.

At that stage, the Blades still hadn’t reached an agreement on personal terms with Trusty, though Smith didn’t believe that would be a significant issue.

Trusty has been linked with a transfer all summer, with Rangers among the clubs reportedly pursuing him. But they had a bid turned down and don’t seem to have returned with another.

Ipswich Town were also among a sizeable number of clubs keen on a move for Trusty, after his loan spell in the Championship with Birmingham City last season.

The defender won the Supporters’ Player of the Season award with Birmingham, and he was only a couple of appearances off hitting 50 games for the side.

Trusty joined Arsenal for the pre-season tour of the U.S., helping the Gunners to win the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge by hitting the crossbar from range.

But when it came to the actual matches, Trusty featured for just 10 minutes as a substitute against the All-Stars, before failing to come on against Manchester United and Barcelona.

With Arsenal making the defensive addition of Jurrien Timber, and injured defenders like William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu returning to fitness, it’s hard to see a way in for Trusty now that the season is almost underway.

Trusty joined Arsenal in 2022 for a fee of around £1.8m, so a £5m sale would represent a profit.
