The Athletic reported on Tuesday night that Auston Trusty is set to join Sheffield United in a permanent deal for a fee of £5m.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the deal has been agreed, and Trusty will now join the Premier League side permanently.

Sheffield outlet The Star recently reported that Trusty is expected to be a Sheffield United player by the time their Premier League season kicks off on August 12th.

As further confirmation of the move, Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom said on Tuesday: “I said I’ll give you my normal answer, but I think we’re virtually there with that. He’s had a medical & we’re ready to go. It’s between the clubs.”

Trusty has been linked with a transfer all summer, with Rangers among the clubs reportedly pursuing him. But they had a bid turned down and don’t seem to have returned with another.

Ipswich Town were also among a sizeable number of clubs keen on a move for Trusty, after his loan spell in the Championship with Birmingham City last season.

The defender won the Supporters’ Player of the Season award with Birmingham, and he was only a couple of appearances off hitting 50 games for the side.

Trusty joined Arsenal for the pre-season tour of the U.S., helping the Gunners to win the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge by hitting the crossbar from range.

But when it came to the actual matches, Trusty featured for just 10 minutes as a substitute against the All-Stars, before failing to come on against Manchester United and Barcelona.

With Arsenal making the defensive addition of Jurrien Timber, and injured defenders like William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu returning to fitness, it was hard to see a way in for Trusty.

Trusty joined Arsenal in 2022 for a fee of around £1.8m, so a £5m sale would represent a quick profit.
