Arsenal have agreed a deal worth an initial £25m to sign David Raya from Brentford, with the player to sign a five-year contract with an option for a sixth.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Arsenal had reached an agreement with Brentford for the transfer of goalkeeper David Raya, with the player expected to sign a five-year deal to 2028 with an option for a sixth.

The same source claimed the fee is worth in the region of £30m including add-ons, though there has been a bit of debate on the exact figure.

Gary Jacob reports for The Times that the initial fee for Raya will be just £25m, with add-ons on top of that bringing the total to “around £30m”, but Luca Bendoni of Di Marzio claims the total package is £28m.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the total package will be “close” to £30m, so £28m could turn out to be correct.

Whatever the exact price, it’s significantly below Brentford’s initial £40m valuation on the goalkeeper, a price that caused the likes of Tottenham Hotspur to pull out of the race.

Spurs will probably feel a bit silly watching the goalkeeper now moving to their rivals for an initial £25m.

Fabrizio Romano claims Raya will complete a medical on Wednesday or Thursday, with transfer documents being prepared and the deal done.

Luca Bendoni adds that Raya’s agent will be in London on Wednesday to complete the paperwork for the move.

Raya was already spotted in the stands at Wembley as Arsenal took on Manchester City at the weekend.

Raya made 39 appearances for Brentford last season, keeping 12 clean sheets.

The goalkeeper has also played his way into contention for a spot in the Spanish national team over the last year and a half, making his debut last March and travelling to the World Cup.

Melissa Reddy reports that there will be no automatic first-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal when Raya joins. He’ll compete with Aaron Ramsdale for a place in the team.
