Arsenal’s injury list has grown to eight, with the Gunners picking up a couple of new problems in the friendly against FC Nurnberg on Thursday.

Arsenal took a 30-man squad to Germany for the game against FC Nurnberg on Thursday, but only 23 players were named on the teamsheet on matchday.

Runar Alex Runarsson was presumably left out because Mikel Arteta only planned to use two goalkeepers, but the other six absentees were all injury-related.

Kaya Kaynak of Football.London reports that Marquinhos has picked up a knock, whilst Rob Holding has been struggling with muscle tightness. Those two were left out as a precaution.

Both Gabriel Martinelli and Takehiro Tomiyasu are in the final stages of their injury rehabilitation, but neither were quite ready for Thursday’s game.

There was worse news with Oleksandr Zinchenko, whose injury situation is reportedly more serious. The left-back could miss the next couple of games, though it seems it’s hoped he’ll be able to feature in the latter stages of pre-season.

Finally, Mohamed Elneny remains absent after his knee surgery, which is no surprise. He was always expected to be the last to return of last season’s injury sufferers.

Unfortunately, there was more bad news to come after the initial teamsheet was submitted.

Martin Odegaard had to withdraw from the game with a knock to his calf he picked up in the warmup, being replaced by Fabio Vieira. Then Leandro Trossard had to come off early in the second half.

Speaking after the match, Arteta admitted the pair “are struggling”, but didn’t give any indication of how serious the problems are.

The big concern with Trossard will be that he’s only just returned from injury after an operation earlier in the summer.

But managers will always be overly cautious in pre-season, and let’s hope that’s all this is.
