Lucas Torreira was left in tears as he reflected on Galatasaray’s title win this week, and his late mother “taking care of me from above”.

On Tuesday, Galatasaray won 4-1 against Ankaragucu to secure the Turkish Super Lig title, as they remain five points clear of Fenerbahce with one game to go.

Former Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira was involved in the game, playing 87 minutes, and he then took part in the celebrations with his teammates.

Torreira wore a shirt saying “Mami, te amo”, which translates to “Mum, I love you”, along with a picture of himself and his mother, who passed away a couple of years ago.

The former Gunner was clearly emotional, breaking down in tears as his teammates celebrated.

Writing on Instagram afterwards, Torreira explained: “In this moment of joy, I also want to thank my family. Especially to you, Mum, who is watching me and taking care of me from above, my biggest admirer and my source of strength.”

Torreira played a key role in Galatasaray’s title-winning season, appearing 30 times in their 34 league games and making 27 starts.

His only absences were due to yellow-card suspensions or other leave unrelated to his performances, as he was called upon whenever he was available.

After an initial promising spell with Arsenal, Torreira found things increasingly difficult in north London, and an exit became inevitable.

One of the problems was Torreira’s homesickness in the wake of his mother’s passing, so to see him come out the other side of that difficult time as a title-winner in Turkey is particularly heartening.

Torreira finished his Instagram post with a call for Galatasaray to “celebrate together and build a lasting legacy in football”, perhaps quelling reports of his desire to leave.

With the club now qualifying for the Champions League, perhaps he might get an Arsenal reunion if he stays for next season.
