West Ham United have shown an interest in Nuno Tavares ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report from Portugal.

Portuguese u21 international Nuno Tavares is currently on loan from Arsenal with Marseille, and he’s set to return to London in the summer.

But according to Record and A Bola, the left-back may end up spending next season with another London club.

The Portuguese outlets write that West Ham United have already shown an interest in signing Tavares, adding that the 23-year-old is one of those likely to leave Arsenal this summer.

If true, a positive negotiating relationship between Arsenal and the Hammers could benefit both clubs this summer, given the Gunners’ pursuit of Declan Rice.

Tavares is nearing the end of his spell with Marseille, but they still have one further game next weekend. Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a dead rubber, with Marseille incapable of catching Lens in second and unable to be caught by Lille in fourth.

A third-place finish secures them a spot in the Champions League qualifiers, whilst PSG and Lens automatically qualify for the Champions League group stage.

Tavares returned to the Marseille side for the second half of their penultimate game against Brest on Saturday, having missed out on the squad for their previous game.

This was reportedly due to disciplinary action, with the French media writing that Tavares clashed with Marseille boss Igor Tudor, and he was briefly suspended along with Dimitri Payet.

Both subsequently returned to training this week, and Tavares was back on the pitch on Saturday.

Yet A Bola claim it’s more likely Tavares’ absence was financially motivated to avoid additional payments to Arsenal.

Tavares has now made 37 appearances for Marseille this season, scoring six goals.

Despite his recent disciplinary issues, there is still some talk of a potential Portugal call-up for Tavares, though this wouldn’t necessarily be great news for Arsenal.

According to reports, one of Tavares’ transfer add-ons states that Arsenal will owe another €1m to Benfica if the player is called up by his country. As of yet, this hasn’t happened.

It would be surprising if Tavares was called up to the Portugal senior squad this summer, however, as he’s been heavily involved in the Portugal u21 side preparing for the 2023 UEFA European u21 Championship.

Tavares featured in many of the qualifiers for this year’s tournament, and he’s played in friendlies for the side over the last couple of international breaks.

You’d now expect Tavares to go on to feature in the actual event, which kicks off on June 21st and lasts until July 8th – for those that make the final.

Roberto Martinez will announce his senior Portugal squad on Monday, so we’ll find out then.
