Reports from last week suggested that Aaron Ramsdale was closing in on a new contract with Arsenal, and various sources have now confirmed those claims.

ESPN report that Ramsdale is close to agreeing a long-term contract, with a significant improvement on his current £60,000-a-week wages. ESPN claim a formal announcement is expected soon.

The Times back up those claims, repeating that Ramsdale is set for a significant wage increase reflecting his status as a top-six goalkeeper. Ramsdale’s previous deal lasted until 2025, with an option to extend by a year.

Football.London write that Arsenal are set to extend Ramsdale’s contract, with the Gunners keen to reward his displays this season.

The Evening Standard write that talks have advanced on a new long-term deal for the goalkeeper.

There’s been talk about a new contract for Ramsdale for quite a while now, with The Athletic reporting all the way back in October that the goalkeeper’s new deal was on the agenda along with the likes of Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and William Saliba.

When Ramsdale joined the club in 2021, he was leaving a relegated Sheffield United side to join an Arsenal team with Bernd Leno as their established first-choice goalkeeper.

Those two factors will certainly have played into his initial contract negotiations.

But things are different now, and he’s a starter for a team heading into the Champions League and competing at the top of the table. A new contract makes sense for all parties.
