Aaron Ramsdale was delighted to learn of his inclusion in the Premier League’s EA Team of the Season this week, but it looks like there might be some further good news on the horizon for the Arsenal goalkeeper.

The Telegraph report that along with Bukayo Saka, Ramsdale is also close to agreeing a new contract with Arsenal.

There’s been talk about a new contract for Ramsdale for quite a while now, with The Athletic reporting all the way back in October that the goalkeeper’s new deal was on the agenda along with the likes of Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and William Saliba.

At the time, The Athletic wrote that all sides acknowledge that Ramsdale should be rewarded with a salary more in line with his status as a first-choice goalkeeper at a top-six club.

When Ramsdale joined the club in 2021, he was leaving a relegated Sheffield United side to join an Arsenal team with Bernd Leno as their established first-choice goalkeeper.

Those two factors will certainly have played into his initial contract negotiations, as he wasn’t in a particularly strong position to argue for a major wage hike. But things are different now.

Ramsdale currently has a contract until 2025, reportedly with an option for a further year. All the same, this seems like a good time for him to extend, with Arsenal competing at the top of the table and returning to the Champions League.

Speaking in March, Ramsdale suggested he’s hoping to settle down for the long term at Arsenal.

“It was a difficult period moving club to club, even before that, going on loan and stuff,” Ramsdale said of the early stages of his career.

“I never imagined leaving Bournemouth after a year, I never imagined leaving Sheffield United after a year.

“But this is a place now where I can see myself for 10, 12, 15 years. That’s the aim, that’s the goal, to stay at the top for that amount of time.

“And hopefully, never have to leave, and become a real hero and legend at this football club.”
