Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal will soon finalise and announce a contract extension for Aaron Ramsdale.

The deal has been agreed with an improved salary, and Romano states that the goalkeeper has accepted Arsenal’s proposal.

This follows reports from various sources in the last few days that Ramsdale was close to an extension.

Earlier this week, ESPN reported that Ramsdale was close to agreeing a long-term contract, with a significant improvement on his current £60,000-a-week wages. ESPN claimed a formal announcement is expected soon.

The Times backed up those claims, repeating that Ramsdale is set for a significant wage increase reflecting his status as a top-six goalkeeper. Ramsdale’s previous deal lasted until 2025, with an option to extend by a year.

Football.London and the Evening Standard were also among those to confirm that Ramsdale was closing in on a new deal.

There’s been talk about a new contract for Ramsdale for quite a while now, with The Athletic reporting all the way back in October that the goalkeeper’s new deal was on the agenda along with the likes of Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and William Saliba.

When Ramsdale joined the club in 2021, he was leaving a relegated Sheffield United side to join an Arsenal team with Bernd Leno as their established first-choice goalkeeper.

Those two factors will certainly have played into his initial contract negotiations.

But things are different now, and he’s a starter for a team heading into the Champions League and competing at the top of the table.

Ramsdale has made 38 appearances for Arsenal this season, keeping 14 clean sheets. The return of Champions League football is only likely to increase that tally in the following campaign.

A new contract makes sense for all parties.
