Chelsea would be one of the beneficiaries if Arsenal sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer, according to a report.

The Evening Standard report that Crystal Palace are set to demand £50m for Marc Guehi this summer, amid interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Guehi has another three years on his contract with his current club, so it may be difficult to convince them to settle for less.

If Palace’s demands are met, Chelsea would be one of those to benefit, as they inserted a 20% sell-on clause in Guehi’s deal when he left Stamford Bridge.

So if Arsenal or Spurs pay the full £50m, Chelsea will receive £10m of that fee.

The Daily Mail were first to report Arsenal’s interest in Guehi earlier this month, as the Gunners look to secure cover for William Saliba.

The French international should be back in action next season, but the last month of football has made it pretty clear that Arsenal’s defensive options aren’t particularly deep.

With the return of Champions League football, Mikel Arteta needs to be able to rotate without such a significant dip in quality.

On the other hand, perhaps Jakub Kiwior’s recent form might help the situation a little. The Polish international is proving an able deputy for Saliba, taking the pressure off the centre-back search somewhat.

It’s worth bearing in mind that one of Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White could usually fill in at centre-back, had Tomiyasu not picked up an injury at the same time as Saliba.

That same scenario could happen again next season, so Arsenal do need to make some kind of defensive signing. But it could be another right-back to allow White to move across when required.

So whilst you wouldn’t write off a move for Guehi just yet, Arsenal at least have options.
