Arsenal’s Ovie Ejeheri swapped non-league football for the Finnish first tier in January, and he’s quickly finding form with his new side.

20-year-old Arsenal goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri was one of the success stories of the club’s summer loan business in the first half of the season, playing regularly for National League South side Chelmsford City and keeping 12 clean sheets.

Ejeheri earned a reputation as a penalty-save specialist, after keeping out two spot-kicks in two games, he won Chelmsford’s Player of the Month award in November, and he helped them push for promotion.

But Ejeheri and Arsenal decided to take a risk in the January window, striking while the iron was hot to move the keeper from the English sixth tier to the Finnish first division.

The youngster joined SJK Seinajoki during their winter break, signing another loan deal lasting until the summer.

Ejeheri initially made his debut in the Liiga Cup, a tournament largely held indoors during pre-season in Finland. He then spent March playing in friendly matches as SJK prepared for their league campaign to get underway this month.

But it seems to have been worth the wait for the goalkeeper. Once again, Ejeheri seems to have a guaranteed starting spot, and he’s kept two clean sheets in his first three league games with SJK.

Unfortunately, SJK have only won one of those three matches, as they failed to score in their last two. But on an individual level, Ejeheri can’t do much more than keep the shots out at his end.

SJK’s league fixtures carry on until September, given their season operates on a calendar-year basis. But Ejeheri will return over the summer.

Neither Arsenal nor SJK clarified exactly when the loan will end, with SJK reporting he’d be on loan for “six months” and return to Arsenal “in the summer”. The assumption is that he’ll stay until June 30th, when player contracts usually expire.

That would give the goalkeeper another 10 games for potential involvement before returning to Arsenal and deciding on his next steps.
