Arsenal target Martín Zubimendi has stated in an interview with Sport that he had no plans to leave Real Sociedad in January and is happy at the club.
Despite previous reports that Arsenal had been interested in signing him in January, Zubimendi denied any knowledge of such interest and emphasised that he was focused on his current team.
“Rumours, rumours, because I told my agent that I didn’t want to hear anything, especially in winter,” Zubimendi said. “Leaving Real Sociedad aside with the season we are having would be illogical. I am very happy here.
The 24-year-old midfielder signed a new deal with Real Sociedad last October tying him to the club until 2027. It includes a release clause of €60m and there were reports Arsenal were prepared to meet it.
At that time, the player was said to want to wait until the summer to make any move.
Zubimendi joined Real Sociedad’s youth academy in 2011 and made his professional debut for the club in 2018.
Since then, he has become an important player for the team, making over 130 appearances and scoring a handful of goals. He is known for his versatility and ability to play in different midfield roles.
Zubimendi has also represented Spain at various youth levels, including the U-21 team. He was called up to the senior national team for the first time in June 2021 and has one cap.
At just 24 years old, Zubimendi is considered one of the most promising young talents in La Liga, and his performances have caught the eye of several top European clubs.
