Retired US soccer goalkeeper and former Premier League player, Brad Friedel, has called for American footballers Christian Pulisic and Matt Turner to move to new clubs during the summer transfer window for more playing time.
Christian Pulisic has struggled to find consistent game time at Chelsea due to injuries and managerial changes, while Matt Turner has only been used as a cup keeper for Arsenal, making six appearances this season.
Friedel believes that Pulisic is one of the most important players for the US national team, and if he is not getting enough opportunities at Chelsea, he needs to move to a new team to play consistently.
He added that the recent signings of Mudryk, Sterling, Felix, and Madueke over the last two transfer windows have clogged Chelsea’s depth chart at winger even further.
As for Turner, Friedel thinks that he needs to find consistent football somewhere, even though Arsenal is an incredible club and this isn’t the first time the former Spurs keeper has told Turner to leave Arsenal.
Turner was the United States’ number one goalkeeper during the World Cup and started in every game, but Zack Steffen, who wasn’t getting a game at Manchester City, is now playing well for Middlesbrough, which could lead to another change in who is the number one keeper for the US national team.
Friedel believes that these players have a short career as professional footballers and they need to play as many games as possible inside that time.
“You have such a short career as a professional footballer and you need to play as many games as possible inside that time.
“Look at Matt’s competition for the national team spot,” Friedel said. “He was the number one then and he’s gone all this time without playing, but Zack Steffen, who wasn’t getting a game at Manchester City, is now playing well for Middlesbrough.
“They are possible promotion candidates and all of a sudden with Zack playing at a high level in the Championship and potentially in the Premier League and he’s playing every week whilst Matt is on the bench, then you’re looking at another change in who is the number one keeper for the US national team.
“I think that Matt, no matter what, even though Arsenal are an incredible club, has to find consistent football somewhere. This season, fine, but if he’s not going to be the number one he has got to go.
