In training photos ahead of Arsenal’s game against Newcastle United, a number of academy players could be seen joining the first-team squad.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, Reuell Walters, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, Matt Smith, Zane Monlouis, and Amario Cozier-Duberry can all be spotted in either the foreground or the background of pictures from the latest session.

The game against Newcastle United is a big one, with Arsenal taking on the only Premier League side in similar form to themselves. Even the likes of Manchester City can’t match Newcastle’s recent form.

As a result, it’s unlikely any of the above players are set to get a game on Tuesday night. However, the match against Oxford United next Monday is a much more realistic target.

If the academy players want to be ready for that game, taking part in senior sessions throughout this week will help them prepare.

Many of the players listed above took part in Arsenal’s mid-season friendlies, but they’re still waiting on a competitive debut under Mikel Arteta.

Perhaps Cozier-Duberry has the best chance, after impressive performances both for the academy and in the Emirates Stadium friendly against Juventus.

Arsenal are unlikely to play a particularly weakened team, as there are plenty of squad players waiting for a chance to get on the pitch.

Arteta could name a lineup of mostly senior backups against Oxford:

Matt Turner (or Karl Hein), Cedric Soares, Rob Holding, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kieran Tierney, Mohamed Elneny, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos, and Emile Smith Rowe may all be available.

But with Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Jesus out, that’s only 10 players. So either a first-choice player will keep their place, or a youth option will need to come in.
