Mohamed Elneny has suffered a severe right knee injury during a recent training session, as confirmed by assessments according to Arsenal who delivered the news on Tuesday.

He underwent successful surgery in London and will be unavailable for ‘an extended time’.

The club state that the exact time frame will be determined once his initial rehabilitation is finished.

Elneny is, of course, out of contract in the summer although there had been the expectation that Arsenal would trigger an option to extend his deal for a further 12 months.

With the arrival of Jorginho from Chelsea for £12m imminent, that seems unlikely now.

Elneny has only played 354 minutes this season for Arsenal and has not been included in a match day squad since he was on the bench for the game against Newcastle.
