Hector Bellerin did not take any part in El Clasico as he picked up a calf injury ruling him out of his side’s 3-1 defeat at the Bernabeu.

Hector Bellerin picked up a calf problem at the end of September which looks likely to keep him out of action until Barcelona face Villarreal on 20 October.

The injury meant that he missed his first chance to play in what is one of the most famous games in football.

Barcelona lost the game 3-1 after first half goals from Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde proved too much for them to overcome.

Ferran Torres did manage to pull one back in the 83rd minute but a Real Madrid penalty in injury time gave Rodrigo the chance to make it 3-1 and put any doubt to bed.

Unless the two sides are drawn against each other in the cups, Bellerin will only have one more chance to play in El Clasico before he is on his way to Real Betis next summer.

The former Arsenal man signed just a 12-month contract with his boyhood club as Betis, his dad’s boyhood club, are unable to afford his wages until next season.

Arsenal did not cancel Bellerin’s contract, rather, they allowed him to move for free in what was a disappointing end to his career in North London.

Bellerin’s contract expired next season so, in effect, if we’d sent him on loan this season, we would have been letting him leave for free, anyway.

Still, it sticks in the throat that is Barcelona once again benefit.

Bellerin, of course, joined Arsenal from Barcelona in 2011 along with Jon Toral, who currently plays for OFI Crete FC after congenital knee problems scuppered his career at the very highest level.

His former teammate had no such problems.

Bellerin played for Arsenal 239 times, scoring nine, assisting 29 and was loved by all fans.

He also won three FA Cups and three Community Shields.

Last season, he won the Spanish Cup with Real Betis while on loan.
