Mike Keegan reports that PSV Eindhoven have been fined €40,000, their fans will be banned for their next European away game, and they will also have to reimburse Arsenal for the damage to the Emirates Stadium following the crowd trouble last Thursday.

Assuming there are no delays or appeals, this means PSV won’t be able to send fans to their game against FK Bodo/Glimt next week.

UEFA had opened disciplinary proceedings against PSV after fans threw chairs and flares from the away end following their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The Dutch club were charged with throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, acts of damage, and crowd disturbances.

The Metropolitan Police also made two arrests, one on suspicion of throwing a flare, another on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

There’s never any justification for these kinds of scenes, but they’re even more bizarre after a game like last Thursday’s. The two teams didn’t play out a particularly fiery contest, and the fans hardly interacted at all during the match.

Now, PSV will bear the costs of their fans’ stupidity, and those fans will have to cancel their trip to Norway.
