Charlie Patino had one of his best games for Blackpool at the weekend, scoring once, assisting once, winning the Man of the Match award, and earning the love of the fans by shushing the away end during their derby against Preston North End.

Jerry Yates was the scorer for Patino’s assist, and he bagged a couple of goals on the day. After the game, he was effusive in his praise for his young teammate.

“He’s sensational,” Yates said. “He deserves all the credit. Hearing the fans singing his song for 90 minutes I bet is surreal, to be honest.

“He’s only young, but the way he has [taken] to the Championship is unbelievable. He’ll be a top, top player.”

Patino is certainly young, having turned 19 last week. The hope is that he’ll continue to improve and adapt to senior football with every passing week.

The loan to the Championship looks perfect for Patino so far. A very technically-gifted player, the English second-tier will help the midfielder get up to speed with the physical side of the game, which will be vital if he’s going to succeed in the Premier League.

On top of that, it’s just good for Patino to be playing matches every week. Saturday’s game was his seventh consecutive league start, and he probably would have racked up even more if not for his injury in August.

Arsenal’s primary concern for Patino right now should relate to his contract. David Ornstein recently reported that Patino’s contract expires next summer, and whilst it has a two-year option to extend, that option must be exercised before a specific date.

At this stage, Arsenal are yet to open contract talks, either to activate that option or to hand the teenager a fresh deal.

Ornstein also confirmed Arsenal have a recall clause in Patino’s contract for January, though the Gunners have no plans to activate it at this stage.
