David Seaman has been talking about how nice Gabriel Martinelli is, a trait the Daily Mirror says hints at a ‘future captaincy’ for a player who wants to be Arsenal captain.

When I first saw the headline on the Mirror’s site, I assumed David Seaman, who is still around at London Colney, helping out on the coaching side of things with some of the youngsters, had said something pretty insightful about Gabriel Martinelli to lead them to declare, “Gabriel Martinelli hailed for trait which hints at future Arsenal captaincy.”

I was therefore disappointed to find that Seaman had only really been talking about what a nice guy Martinelli is, which hardly strikes me as ground-breaking news.

Speaking on his Seaman Says podcast, David said: “He’s a really nice guy. When I go in [to the club] he is always with the young lads, always around them and saying hello.

“So he’s a really nice guy and to see him performing how he is on the pitch is brilliant.”

I am, of course, not having a dig at Seaman nor Martinelli, but questioning why the Mirror thought a statement so dull was worth mentioning at all.

So, you might be wondering why I’m mentioning something I think they shouldn’t have bothered mentioning, and you’d be right to do so.

As I read their piece, looking for something, anything to justify doing so, just as you are doing now, I realised that they were talking about Martinelli being captain material without mentioning that Martinelli has spoken about wanting to be Arsenal captain.

Speaking when he renewed his contract in 2020, Martinelli said, “I have just signed a five-year contract here and I will stay five years here.

“If they renew with me again, I will stay at this club. I love, love this club. I dream of winning the league and the Champions League here.

“Arteta is the boss. I am trying to follow his path in being an idol at the club, winning trophies and being captain.”

And that’s all I came here to say.
