After trying to get a move to Arsenal in the summer, Douglas Luiz has signed a new contract with Aston Villa, the club he ‘loves’.

Douglas Luiz has finally signed a new contract with Aston Villa after Steven Gerrard’s side refused to sell the midfielder on deadline day in the summer.

Arsenal made a number of bids for Douglas Luiz on the final day of the window, all of which were rebuffed as Villa stood strong in their assertion that the midfielder was not for sale.

They were confident they could get him to agree a new deal and they have been proved right to be so.

To be honest, it has probably worked out for the best all around.

Luiz has likely landed a better deal had Arsenal not been so insistent on signing him.

As for Arsenal, it all seemed a bit panicky after injuries to midfielders.

That’s not to say the club couldn’t do with midfield reinforcements, I just don’t think this one was as well considered as most of Mikel Arteta’s other moves.

The length of Luiz’s new contract has not been disclosed.

Speaking to Villa’s official website, he said: “I’m so happy. I love this club, love the people, staff and the players.

“I’m so comfortable here and I’m so happy.

“I love this club. This club opened the door for me when I came to England to play in the Premier League,” he added.

“I’m so happy because I’m staying here and my choice is here.”

I think he wants people to know that he is happy and loves the club.
