Football Insider report that Arsenal’s failure to agree a deadline-day deal with Aston Villa for Douglas Luiz hasn’t put them off the idea of signing the player completely, and they’re planning to return for him in January.

According to the report, Arsenal remain in talks with Luiz’s representatives, and the player has told friends he’s keen to join the Gunners and would still like a deal to happen.

Villa want the midfielder to sign a new contract, but they’ve been unsuccessful in their attempts so far.

The Brazilian’s contract expires at the end of the season, so Villa will have to sell in January or lose him for free unless that changes.

It will be interesting to see how hard Arsenal push to sign Luiz in January.

Much of the drive behind this summer’s bid seemed to stem from the injuries to Mikel Arteta’s senior midfielders, who will hopefully be fit again long before January.

So if Arsenal return for Luiz anyway, it will be indicative of how highly they rate him. If they don’t, it suggests he was more of a short-term solution to an immediate problem.
