Birmingham City confirmed on Friday morning that they’d completed the signing of Auston Trusty on loan from Arsenal for the season, subject to international clearance.

When Arsenal signed Trusty, they immediately loaned him back to the Colorado Rapids, before explaining that the next step would be to loan him out within Europe this season. That’s now confirmed, with the defender joining Birmingham City.

“It feels great,” Trusty said. “I am honoured, I am blessed, I am excited for the new chapter and the new challenges. I am just really really happy to be here.

“I am a centre-back. I am willing to run, to get stuck into challenges and willing to sacrifice for my teammates. That is the kind of player you are getting from me and are getting for the team.

“I know it is going to be a challenge, I know the intensity is going to be tough. I am just really looking forward to it.”

Amusingly, news of the transfer was leaked early through social media activity, with eagle-eyed fans spotting that Trusty’s partner Emily Berardino had followed Birmingham City on Instagram. An interesting choice for a woman from Philadelphia.

Neil Moxley of the Mirror then added to the rumours by reporting that Birmingham were set to complete the loan of a Premier League defender on Thursday. Though he didn’t have the name, it was clearly Trusty.

Trusty made 19 appearances for the Colorado Rapids from February to July. It wasn’t the easiest season for the Rapids, as they sat 23rd of 28 MLS teams in the overall standings.

The 23-year-old will now aim to get going in European football, after completing his loan move to the Championship.
