Kelechi Nwakali has been suspended for 10 days without pay by his club, Spanish second division side, SD Huesca, after he returned late from AFCON.

Kelechi Nwakali signed for Arsenal from Diamond Academy in 2016 amid much excitement but it never quite worked out for the midfielder, who has often been hailed as a successor to Jon Obi Mikel in the centre of the Nigerian national team.

He captained his country at u17, u20 and u23 level.

Nwakali made his debut for Nigeria back in 2018 but until this year’s AFCON had not seen any further international action.

The 23-year-old, however, played in three of Nigeria’s four matches at the tournament, making his full debut against Guinea-Bissau in a 2-0 win.

Nwakali’s contract with SD Huesca expires in the summer. He has made 33 appearances for them, mostly in central or attacking midfield, without scoring or assisting

With Arsenal placing a buy-back clause into his contract when they let him go in 2019, Nwakali is hopeful of making it back to London one day.
