Arsenal confirmed on Tuesday that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had finalised his departure from the club via the mutual termination of his contract.

The striker is bound for FC Barcelona, and he’d already been spotted in the background of training photos with his new club, before their official announcement this morning.

The Barcelona deal took a while to finalise even after the Arsenal departure was made official, and that gave Aubameyang the chance to say his goodbyes to his old club on Instagram before moving on to his new one.

“To the Arsenal fans, Thank you for making London home for myself and my family for the past four years,” Aubameyang wrote.

“We went through ups and downs together and your support meant everything to me.

“Having the chance to win trophies and the honour of being the captain of this club is something I will forever keep in my heart.

“I have always been 100% focused and committed on doing everything I can for this club which is why leaving without a real goodbye hurts – but that is football.

“I’m sad I did not get the chance to help my teammates in the last few weeks, but I have nothing but respect for this club and truly wish all my guys and the fans all the best and many successful years in the future! Love, Auba.”

It’s certainly disappointing the way the final weeks of Aubameyang’s career went, but it’s a good thing he’s trying to end on a positive note.

Even before he was stripped of the captaincy, Aubameyang wasn’t having the best year in football terms. His goals were down, and he often seemed out of sync with the team.

That shouldn’t overshadow what came before, as he really was the driving force of the side for a couple of years – most notably in winning the FA Cup and Community Shield.

Hopefully, Aubameyang’s amiable exit message will help supporters to focus on those achievements when they look back on his Arsenal career.
