In what was the only Arsenal-related deadline day drama, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took himself to Barcelona despite nobody apparently expecting him.

Midway through the day, when the deal seemed to collapse because of Aubameyang’s wages, we were told he was on his way back from a family holiday, clearly to collect the family he’d left at home.

As the evening wore on, the deal got back on track. You can see a more detailed breakdown of all the twists and turns here.

Arsenal have now confirmed that Aubameyang has left the club by mutual consent and the forward has already been snapped training with Barcelona.

It is a sad end for a player who did many great things during his time at the club, including all but winning us an FA Cup single-handed.

He was far from the perfect player, on or off the pitch, but he scored 92 goals, with 21 assists, in 163 appearances. You can only imagine what those figures might have been had he been in a decent Arsenal side.

When the dust settles, Aubameyang will be rightly remembered fondly.

There has been much discussion about who is to blame, Mikel Arteta, or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Arsenal were warned that Auba had fallen out with his three coaches before his move to Arsenal, they knew what who they were signing.

Arteta, however, was not the one who brought him to the club.

In the end, there will be questions over Arteta’s ability to manage big personalities and Auba’s reluctance to be told what to do by his boss.

Moving him on quickly is the right thing to do, however, unlike how the Mesut Ozil situation was handled.

That said, not replacing him in the same window could well come back to haunt Arsenal more than having Auba around for the rest of the season ever would have.
