Marc Overmars will see his salary increase four-fold should he agree to take the Sporting Director’s job at Newcastle United.

Despite saying just last month that he would prefer Barcelona over Arsenal, Marc Overmars has reportedly opened talks with Newcastle about jumping onboard their gravy train for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Currently under contract at Ajax until 2024, and on a salary just £620,000, the Mirror report that this will rise to £2.5m-a-year should he agree to join the Magpies.

Overmars is also said to want to bring Ajax’s head coach, Erik ten Hag, with him, which would help sort out another of Newcastle’s issues – who to replace Steve Bruce with.

“At a certain point the thing is simple: either I continue and I stay here in Ajax or we go abroad again as a family,” Overmars told Mundo Deportivo in September when the only two clubs being linked with him were Barcelona and Arsenal.

“I have let that train pass six times,” he added, perhaps betraying a desire to catch the next one.

“They are both interesting. I think my family would choose Spain.

“We lived there very comfortably. And I think they would also choose Barcelona.”

Of course, no other club on the planet can offer what Newcastle are putting in front of the former Arsenal man.

The change to awaken a true sleeping giant using unlimited funds.

That’s hard to say no to.
