According to an Exclusive in the Mirror, Marc Overmars has opened talks with Newcastle United showing that money does indeed, well, talk.

Not that long ago, Marc Overmars was asked if he’d prefer to move to Arsenal or Barcelona and he was quite clear with his answer.

“At a certain point the thing is simple: either I continue and I stay here in Ajax or we go abroad again as a family,” Overmars told Mundo Deportivo in September.

“I have let that train pass six times.

“They are both interesting. I think my family would choose Spain.

“We lived there very comfortably. And I think they would also choose Barcelona.”

Then along came the Diamond encrusted Newcastle train and it all thoughts of sunshine went out the window.

According to the Mirror’s report, “Two intermediaries working on behalf of Newcastle have sounded out Overmars – and the Dutchman is interested in moving to St James’ Park after being told he will be given the resources to awaken the sleeping giant.”

They also add that sources in the Netherlands claim that Overmars also wants to bring the Ajax coach, Erik ten Hag, with him, which would solve one of Newcastle’s other major problems while at the same time being a tremendous blow to Ajax. Losing a sporting director and head coach at the same time is a tough pill to swallow.

It is understandable that Overmars would have his head turned by what is about to happen at Newcastle. He can look to City or PSG as examples of what’s on offer. With unlimited funds, he can build a dream team capable of competing for all the top honours and establish himself as a legend at the club.

Just last week, Raphael van der Vaart, the former Dutch international and Spurs man who lists among his career highlights ‘scoring against Arsenal’ claimed that Overmars wouldn’t be interested in the Newcastle job, showing how much he knows.

“He’s doing so well that everyone wants him,” Van der Vaart told Ziggo Sport, via Voetbal Zone.

“What they have been doing for years, together with Edwin van der Sar, I think is great. It doesn’t surprise me.

“Maybe it is a nice challenge at Newcastle United, but I think he would much rather go to Arsenal. He has more of a connection with that, but I don’t think he’s going to do this.”

Overmars is tied to Ajax until 2024 and on a salary just shy of €1m-a-year, a trifling sum for all three clubs linked, especially the richest club of all.

He would be required to work three months notice, should he decide to move to a new job.
