Released by Arsenal in July at the end of his contract, Joseph Olowu has finally found a new club, signing for Doncaster Rovers where he will play with Arsenal loanee Matt Smith.

Joseph Olowu spent the last few months of his Arsenal contract on loan with Wealdstone until injury once again cut his spell short and he returned to Arsenal. The same had happened the season before when he was on loan with Cork City.

With no offence meant to those two clubs, that they were the level Olowu was being sent to play, showed that, after 13 years with the club, he was sadly not going to have an Arsenal future and so it came to pass when his contract expired this summer.

Now 21, Olowu made his debut for Arsenal’s u23s in January 2017 and went on to play 34 times for them as well as 31 times for the u18s, scoring two and assisting three for both.

After being released by Arsenal, Olowu went on trial with Manchester United, lining up for them and playing the full 90 minutes in games against Chelsea (1-1) and Manchester City (2-4).

“I’m really excited to get the deal done, it’s been a long summer for me but I’ve kept working in the top this time would come,” Olowu said.

“To get this opportunity is something I’m grateful for, patience has been the key and something I’ve learnt in the past few months.

“With everything that’s going on with the pandemic you have to take your time and keep believing that a move will come.

“In football nothing is guaranteed but I’m coming here with the right mentality and hoping I can make a difference.

“I love defending and the physicality it brings, and then I’m capable of bringing the ball out from the back.

“I’ve had a good upbringing at Arsenal and they play football the right way there, so hopefully I can show what I can do here.”

Olowu’s deal with Doncaster only takes him until January 2022 so the centreback’s future is still far from assured but we wish him all the best and hope he is afforded a chance to prove himself and earn a longer deal.
