Hampshire Live report that Miguel Azeez’s absence from Portsmouth’s squad to face Burton Albion on Tuesday night was due to a groin injury.

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley informed the media of the problem, adding that the midfielder has had a scan to determine the severity of the issue.

“He’s got a groin strain, unfortunately,” Cowley said. “He had a scan today, so we are awaiting those results.”

Azeez has only featured once on the pitch for Portsmouth so far, making the bench on three occasions. He made his debut against Cambridge United earlier this month, but it was a tricky match for him.

Portsmouth lost 2-1 on the day, and the Arsenal loanee came off after 59 minutes.

At the time, Cowley explained the midfielder’s role in the team, and why he’s not worried that things didn’t click immediately.

“We played 4-3-3, so we played with a (number) six and two (number) eights,” Cowley said. “Miguel is such a young player who is finding his way in professional football.

“It was a tough start but this is the life of a professional footballer – it’s not always easy. But he’s a top player and he will learn a lot from today.”

The disappointment is that Azeez hasn’t had another chance to feature since then. He was on the bench for a couple of games, and now he’s out with an injury.

This kind of thing happens with young players on their first loan spell. They’ll get injuries, they’ll face the kind of adversity they didn’t encounter in youth football, it’s all a learning experience.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed the groin injury is nothing too serious.

Azeez is the latest of many Arsenal loanees to have injuries, knocks, or illnesses so far, with Daniel Ballard, Jordi Osei-Tutu, Matt Smith, Nikolaj Moller, Tom Smith, Reiss Nelson, and Jonathan Dinzeyi all on that list.
