Despite apparently agreeing terms with a number of clubs, David Luiz was still without a new home until this weekend. From Marseille to Benfica to Flamengo, at some point in the summer, he has been on the verge of joining all three.

Now, however, he has signed for Flamengo, becoming the second former Arsenal and Chelsea man to return to Brazil to play this summer.

Flamengo announces his arrival at the weeked on a deal that will tie him to the club until the end of 2022.

The contract has been described as “one of the most relevant in the club’s recent history,” given Luiz’s trophy-laden career. Luiz has won the league four times in England, France (twice) and Portugal, won the Champions League, two Europa Leagues, eight domestic cups, four super cups and a Confederations Cup with Brazil.

Luiz is also said to want a return to the Brazil national team. He has 57 caps but has not represented his country since 2017.
