Granit Xhaka may finally get his move with Roma prepared to blink first and offer more money than the €15m they’ve already put on the table.

Sky Sport Italia reported that AS Roma’s move for Granit Xhaka is stalling because the club aren’t willing to pay Arsenal’s already-reduced €20m asking price for the player. Xhaka remains their primary transfer target, but the two clubs have reached a bit of a deadlock.

Now, however, it is claimed that the Italians are prepared to finally offer more for the Swiss midfielder. How much more, however, is not clear, and it’s not certain it will be enough for Arsenal to give in. They’ve held firm so far, which is most unlike them.

Earlier this month, Calciomercato.it reported that Arsenal were only willing to sell Xhaka for an offer of €20m, not including add-ons.

As far as we know from previous reports in the media, Arsenal turned down a €15m bid from Roma. The suggestion from RomaPress at the time was that they didn’t intend to raise their offer, and that’s how it has panned out until now.

Roma are evidently confident that they remain the front-runners for Xhaka’s signature, and that they’ll get a deal over the line at the price they want to pay if they just wait long enough.

But I wouldn’t be so sure. Xhaka’s performances at Euro 2020 raised his profile, and may well attract other bidders. Even if not, Arsenal might just decide to keep the midfielder.

Xhaka still has two years left on his contract, and if he leaves Arsenal need to replace him. If his departure doesn’t generate the funds necessary to do that, it doesn’t make sense to sell.
