Real Sociedad confirmed a double injury blow on Sunday, affecting two players who previously represented Arsenal.

First, Nacho Monreal is having problems with discomfort in his right knee. His treatment will begin on Monday and keep him out for at least a few weeks.

Unfortunately, summer signing Mat Ryan is also injured, before even making his debut for his new club. He twisted his knee in training and suffered a cartilage injury. He’ll need surgery and a likely four-to-six weeks out.

Sky Sports reported in June that Arsenal were initially one of the clubs interested in signing Ryan, following his loan spell in North London. But it seems the Gunners didn’t follow up that interest.

Instead, the goalkeeper agreed terms with Real Sociedad, who formally unveiled him a couple of weeks ago. The suggestion was that Arsenal would instead look for a young, homegrown goalkeeper to act as a backup to Bernd Leno.

Two players who got on very well with the supporters during their time at the Emirates Stadium, we wish Ryan and Monreal the best with their recoveries.
