Sky Sports report that Arsenal are one of the clubs interested in signing Mat Ryan on a permanent deal this summer, but they’re not the only ones. With his Brighton contract up in 2022, clubs from France and Spain are also in the race.

Ryan is certainly expected to leave Brighton this summer, but given his age he’s keen to be a number one at his next club. It’s not entirely clear that’s what Arsenal are offering him.

If Bernd Leno leaves and Ajax’s Andre Onana joins, that could open up an opportunity for Ryan to join as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the immediate term.

Onana is banned from matches until November following rulings from UEFA and CAS. So with Leno gone, Arsenal would need someone else to start from August to November even with the addition of Onana.

But that may not be enough for Ryan. He’s 29 years old, and probably wants the promise of a number-one spot beyond the next few months.

It’s also not entirely clear that Ryan is Arsenal’s priority either. The suggestion from some recent reports in the English media is that the club are ideally looking for a young, homegrown goalkeeper.

It’s still very early in the window. Arsenal and Ryan will probably want to see what opportunities the market throws up before making a decision.
