Former Arsenal academy winger Xavier Amaechi has completed a loan transfer to Karlsruher SC, as he pushes to make his breakthrough in senior football.
A few seasons ago now, Xavier Amaechi was part of a talented Arsenal u23 front three alongside Tyreece John-Jules and Bukayo Saka. Under Freddie Ljungberg, they had an impressive campaign and finished 2nd in the PL2 despite their inexperience at that level.
They each took different paths, with John-Jules extending his contract and going out on loan, Saka stepping up to the first team, and Amaechi leaving for Hamburg. But things haven’t entirely worked out for Amaechi in Germany so far.
The idea of moving to second division club Hamburg was to get into the starting lineup and help them up to the Bundesliga, before establishing his career in one of Europe’s top leagues.
However, Hamburg narrowly missed out on promotion last campaign, and Amaechi is still only up to five senior appearances in one-and-a-half years. As a result, he needs a loan to really get going again.
Hence the move to Karlsruher SC, which is now official. Amaechi will join them until the end of the season, with the suggestion that he’ll get more opportunities to feature for the fellow 2. Bundesliga side.
Let’s hope he does. More than just wanting the best for our old academy players, Arsenal also have a financial incentive to want Amaechi to succeed, as they have a sell-on clause in his contract. So good luck to him with Karlsruher SC!
