Arsenal announced their Player of the Month award for October this week, with Gabriel Magalhaes winning the fan votes in another landslide.

In September, we commented on how one-sided the poll was, with Gabriel winning 72% of the votes despite Arsenal offering fans four different options. This time, he won 79%. That’s almost four in five supporters picking him over the alternatives.

Hector Bellerin finished second, with Bukayo Saka in third, and both of them put in some good performances in October. But the defensive work by Gabriel was clearly the key to the results Arsenal got.

The centre-back kept a clean sheet at Anfield, and also played in narrow 2-1 wins over Sheffield United and Rapid Vienna. Even for the two defeats, to Manchester City and Leicester City, Arsenal only conceded a single goal in each.

We know Mikel Arteta’s side have struggled offensively so far this season, which is why the defending has been all the more important. Any lapses and we quickly end up with results like the Aston Villa game.

Regardless of what else is going on at the club, Gabriel is looking like a top signing right now.
