After winning the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award in September, a Sam Greenwood injury forced him into surgery this week.

Leeds United confirmed a Sam Greenwood injury over the international break. The former Arsenal academy striker picked up an ankle problem with England, and will reportedly miss the next three or four weeks recovering.

The issue was sufficiently bad to require surgery, but the player confirmed on his Instagram page that it went well.

Greenwood scored four goals in three Premier League 2 games in September, earning him the PL2 Player of the Month award. He then scored against Middlesbrough in October and got an England call-up, before the injury struck him down.

Arsenal confirmed Greenwood’s departure to Leeds in late August. He spent a surprisingly short time in North London, leaving after just two years, with reports that he was growing homesick after moving down south.

The 18-year-old made 46 appearances for the Gunners across the FA Youth Cup, the u18 Premier League, the EFL Trophy and the Premier League 2. He scored 16 goals and assisted a further six.

The talent was clearly there, but he wasn’t always showing it in his second season. He ended the 2019/20 campaign with six goals, a tally he’s already one off matching with Leeds. The move seems to be working out, he just needs to get fit again now.
