Willian is reportedly ‘upset and offended’ by how Chelsea went about his contract negotiations, with the forward receiving a ‘take it or leave it’ deal from Roman Abramovich’s right-hand, Marina Granovskaia.

Arsenal look set to make Willian their first senior signing of the summer and it seems that he will leave Chelsea with a sour taste in his mouth which, I’m sure we can all agree, must be a common occurrence.

Previously, Willian had said he loved it so much at Chelsea he’d like to retire there but now he’s heading across London to join Mikel Arteta’s revolution. And all Chelsea had to do was offer him an extra year on his deal. That’s all he wanted.

It wasn’t even about the money.

According to a number of outlets, Chelsea made their offer to Willian before the lockdown and it was, at that stage, a ‘take it or leave it’ offer. This has not come about because he was flirting with Arsenal, at least, not that we’ve heard as of yet.

Although football has been back for around three months, talks did not move any further than that between the two parties with Chelsea unwilling to move on their offer, most likely due to their very strict over-30s policy which rarely gets mentioned because it’s not Arsenal’s.

Willian played in every Premier League and FA Cup match for Chelsea this season except the first game of the season, when he had a hamstring problem, the last game of the season when he was omitted from the squad altogether, just as he was from the cup final.

Although included in Chelsea’s Champions League squad for the tournament, it is extremely doubtful he will feature against Bayern Munich in any fashion on Saturday night.
