As Jeorge Bird highlighted on Twitter, Alfie Matthews made a couple of posts hinting at a possible transfer on Instagram.

In the first, he said: “Another good session today! We keep pushing towards this big move.” Then, in the second he added: “These running sessions are not what I want! But we push towards this big move.”

The forward’s contract is up this summer, so whether he stays on depends on the result of his talks with the club. With no youth football until next season, he’s out of chances to make his case on the pitch.

Matthews didn’t seem to be ruling out the possibility of an Arsenal stay in his Instagram live though. Whilst he admitted he has “no idea” when he’ll next be able to train with the Gunners first-team, he added that he hoped he would soon.

The 18-year-old made it clear it was a privilege and a dream come true to train with the senior players. So if he does move on, it’s seemingly not a case of a big fallout with Arsenal. Just perhaps the best next step for his career.

Matthews scored five goals and assisted one in 15 u18 PL games this season. He was on a good run of form pre-lockdown, notching four of those goal contributions in his last six games. The media previously linked him with a move to Newcastle.
