Football Insider claim Newcastle are working on a deal to sign Alfie Matthews in the current transfer window. They’re already holding discussions with Arsenal and plan to make an offer in January.

FI write that Matthews is out of contract at the end of the season. Newcastle don’t plan to wait until then though, moving to get the youngster in now.

Matthews plays in an advanced role for the Arsenal u18s, mostly playing as a centre-forward this season. He has a couple of goals in 11 appearances in 2019/20 (seven starts in all competitions).

He can also play other attacking roles though, featuring as an attacking midfielder at times in the current campaign. He’s certainly a tidy player, though you’d want to see a few more goals and assists from an Arsenal forward.

There are also rumours Newcastle want to bring in fellow Arsenal youngster Stan Flaherty, who recently confirmed he’s going to leave the Gunners.

For now, Matthews is still playing for Arsenal. He started against Southampton for the u18s in the FA Youth Cup last Thursday. The young Gunners face Southampton again in the league this Saturday, away from home this time.
